Book shops Big and Small

Small book shop, Santa Fe. Av

El Ateneo Bookshop

The first book shop here is 1 block from my apartment, and its incredible. Two contiunous walls full of books down either side and piles in between. A rail runs along the wall and a ladder slides along. Ive seen another one like this and customers just use the ladders - and browse 3 m up the air. I like it, it feels much more like a discovery. I get about half way down the shop and see a small old lady peeping round one of the piles, she doesnt like that im taking photos and that im not buying. Its a shame, because i can't read any of these books -so they are just spectacle's for me. Having said that these two shops are amazing, in two different ways. The second is an old theatre, the stage is now the cafe, the boxes are reading rooms and its all very grand. And it makes the Guardian's Sam Dodson's top 10 bookshops in the world. Now i can tick two off the list, ive already been to Livrario Lello in Porto.
