The Palace of Flowing Water, Av Cordoba

This is a water pumping station, inside a French renaissance palace. The Palace of Flowing Waters (Palacio de Aguas Corrientes) was built by an english comapny and designed by a Swedish-Argentine architect, Carlos Nystromer, in 1887. All the terra cotta tiles for the building were imported from England, made by Royal Doulton and It still contains a working pumphouse. (Wikipedia)

Over the last few weeks there has been some pretty fierce postering around the city in the run up to the mayoral elections. The two min candiates, Maurico Macri (Yellow with triangles) and Daniel Filmus (Blue, friends with the President) have been constantely trying to out poster the other in the lead up to this sundays election. Macris lot were handing out ballons to children with huge similey faces on one side and his name on the other! Now its over, Macri, the former boss at Boca Juniors won. Then this morning I see this 'Gracias' poster.

[Above] All the worlds most famous architcture, painstakingly recreated in model form over the years by the faculty. It felt a bit like a 3d walking quiz as you walk around recognising each one. Some very well made models.
[Below] Palacio Barolo Drawings. Plan and elevation drawings of the building I photographed in an earlier post. Nice. They are big as well, at least 2m long each.

Facultad de Arquitectura Diseño y Urbanismo (FADU)

The other night I went to the faculty of architecture to see a friend. It was final results day for the current module so everyone in the year was in for feedback and results. (5th year) The building is on a big campus, 30mins outside town in a huge concrete building. Like everything else in Argentina, it started late, crits normally happen between 7 and 11pm. So i arrive at about 8 and see some reviews (not that i understood a word) but he translates now and then.
All the main teaching rooms come off of this atrium which is where the cafe and shops are. (Theres a print shop, stationary shop, model shop etc) There are these huge posters hanging from from the balconies, as i understand it political mostly. The huge white poster which takes up all of one end is dedicated to the friends of the faculty who were taken and murdered during the dirty war. it reads "compañeros de la FADU detenidos desaparecidos y asesinados por el terrorismo de estao, Siempre Presente" -Friends of FADU detained, dissapeared and assasinated for the terrorism of the state, always present.

Drug addict sketches

We were opposite the obelisk yesterday when a guy approaches us asking for money - then he sees my friends is holding a notepad and pen so he grabs it and does a little sketch. (in blue above). He then says two things in quick sucession, 1. He is the leonardo divinci of buenos aires and that his sprit is chanelled through him into his drawings. and 2. do we have any cocaine / or want to buy some, (we wernt sure which). Later on we see him again and he offers another sketch. On the second sketch he says these are the trainers he wants.
